Lynne, Sometimes teeth which have had root canals need to be re treated. It is possible that when the root canal was done a canal was missed- this is not uncommon- and the tooth could still bother you. There are other reasons why the tooth may need to be re treated. Teeth with crowns on it could have root canals done to them by going through the top of the crown and later filling the access when the root canal is completed. Sometimes it is necessary to replace the crown if the root canal is difficult, or if the crown is damaged during the procedure. Usually once a root canal is completed and a crown is placed on the tooth the problem should be solved, but there is always a chance that the tooth might need future treatment. The best way to insure the least amount of problems following any dental treatment is to be sure to keep up with good oral hygiene habits, and by seeing your dentist regularly for cleanings and check ups. Sincerely, Dr. Nancy Khalaf
