Root canal on a healthy tooth?

I just recently had a dental consultation where the dentist told me that I will need root canals and crowns on my four top front teeth which will cost over $6000.0. The main problem with this, besides the cost, is I am not experiencing any pain, infection, or visible decay on three of these four teeth. Is a root canal REALLY necessary?
